B. My class this week
There wasn't a set lesson plan for this week. My college pastor was unable to attend because of car troubles, so the group was student led. We didn't find out about it until we arrived at church, so it made for an interesting group this week.
Only five people attended this week, so we had a very smal group instead of an actual Sunday School. We sat in a circle and used the time we had to catch up on each other's lives during the past week. We were all tired and ready for spring break to get here.
Towards the end of the group, someone posed the question "what has God been doing in your life lately" as well as "what prayer requests do you want prayer for."
Over all, it was a good meeting because we had the chance to meet together in the name of the Lord and enjoy each other's company.
C. My reaction to this week's meeting
I was incredibly tired this week, so going to Sunday School was far from being on my radar. I was alright with catching up on people's lives, but I was really uncomfortable when I was asked what God had been doing in my life lately. Maybe I don't think about it enough, but I always get irritated when I am asked that question. God is giving me strength to get through the week and the day. What else do you want me to talk about?
D. Questions
1. How do you react to the question "What has God been doing in your life lately? Does the question ever bother you?
2. How do you feel about 'on-the-fly' Sunday School meetings?

Re: Question about what God has been doing your life lately... I believe that it is a good question, definitely overused. But it does annoy me in that they expect you to spill your guts so fast and in such deep detail. I think it's a better question for a mentoring relationship that in small groups for sure.
ReplyDeleteRe: Question about "on-the-fly" meetings...
I think that they can be really good sometimes, when the situation arises that a really good question that can be back up with Biblical information comes up, or a crisis comes up that needs to be dealt with. Otherwise preparation is a needed part of a teacher's responsiblity.
1. I used to be bothered by the question, "What has God been doing in your life lately?". Now it's not that big of a deal...I love talking about how God shows up in my lfe. I will usually tailor which side of God I reveal to different people. For example, if a girl asks me - I probably wouldn't share about my recent deliverance from lust and pornography. That would be a subject for an accountability group. Honestly, I like the question - using it myself sometimes. It is a great tool to keep people accountable in their relationship with the One they claim to be living for. It is humbling when I haven't been in Word recently, but the question encourages spiritual development. I don't have any problem with that. Sometimes we need to be blunt in our approach for God to work.
ReplyDelete2. Preparation is critical. Sometimes a teacher will allot sufficient time blocks for lesson planning, but God chooses not to give him a message in that time. I don't know if it is a matter of strengthening our faith. I have a personal belief that if we give our time to God - He will give it back to us. If we give ourselves time to prepare, I believe God will give us a message to share. I think on-the-fly messages are fine in these specific situations, and these only. It shouldn't be up to us to decide whether or not to prepare...we always should devote our time to receiving God's message through sufficient preparation, as He gives us the words to share in His perfect timing.
